Teaching Procedures

I was assigned to teach in the Junior High School of Sekolah Laboratorium Undiksha specifically, to teach English to Grade VIII students. I had my final teaching in the Grade VIII-2 class. The topic was about Degrees of Comparison, focusing on describing and comparing animals in the zoo. A copy of my lesson plan was given to my Supervising and Cooperating Teachers before the class started. My class started at 9:35 AM and ended at 10:55 AM, for a total of 80 minutes. My Supervising Teachers, A.A. Gede Yudha Paramarta, S.Pd.,M.Pd. and Putu Agita, S.Pd.,M.Pd., were there to evaluate me on my final teaching.

I started my final teaching demonstration by greeting the class, asking them about their day, and checking the attendance. Then I introduced the topic to the class, which is the Degrees of Comparison. Afterwards, activities were being done by the students. They watched and analyzed a video, they constructed sentences using degrees of comparison, and they made a dialogue using also degrees of comparison and performed it in front of the class. I can say that the discussion and the activities went smoothly because the students were able to finish the activities and they also enjoyed it. The class ended with a summary and review of the lesson for that day.

Problem-Solving

The main challenge for me in teaching is on how will I break the barriers between me and my students especially on language. The students are behaved and quiet, which is a good thing and at the same time a bad thing. That is because they may be quiet for they are really that kind of students or they may be quiet because they don't understand me due to language or to my techniques and strategies in teaching which is new to them. However, I did my best in order to have a connection and a fruitful teaching-learning process between me and my students through talking slowly and smoothly and constantly engaging my students in the lesson. There are also other Indonesian Student-Teachers in the class who helped me facilitate the class through translating some statements that students don't understand. Another thing is that, I always try to talk to the students but some of them are not answering because they are shy to speak in English. However, I was constantly talking to them even if they just smile and I also talk to them even outside of the classroom.

Classroom Management

Grade VIII students, who are 13-14 years, old are still young and need to be playful sometimes. However, I can say that I am lucky enough to have known behave and sweet students. My students listen and participate during discussions and they also engage themselves in the activities. They just become noisy during group activities but I believe that those are academic noises. Whenever I call their attention, they always keep quiet immediately. I can say that the students in the class I handled were really kind, sweet, and appreciative to their teachers.
